I like the rain
Living in the mountains, the thunder always rolls a bit longer and the sound lingers as it moves from one side of a canyon to another. Some days, the rain feels out of place here in the sunny state that is Colorado. It feels foreign.
I look out the window as the rain barrelled down, thunder sounding minute after minute for minutes in a row with flashes of lightning in a somehow still lit sky. You can tell the storm will pass quickly as our ever present sun stands by over there, we can still see you.
Today for me, the rain felt so welcome.
I like the smell.
It almost matches my mood.
I have always lived in sunny places for most of my life. Here in Colorado and California before then. Even growing up in Houston, we had insane rain storms, tropical storms, and hurricane warnings but I remember the sun and humidity more. I tried Chicago for a year but that grey in the Winter, hard pass.
I have a weird sensation these days about my future, my vision.
I donโt see much as vision blur is real at times in life. However, I have seen a pair of rain boots in my vision. You know the tall, large boots that go up right under the knee. I see them by the door. I see myself wearing them.
I used to have a pair. They were bright turquoise. I left them outside in the sun one Summer here in Colorado and they did not like that - as if they werenโt made for direct sunlight day after day they began to crackle and chip. I rarely wore them as we have been in a drought for what seems like years. In all honesty, the bright turquoise is no longer my style or color palette. I was once known to only wear neon. Alas, I changed.
So the boots I see now are more oversized, less trendy. They are more of a deep forest green or grey. And I wonder why I need them? With all the hope I can muster, I could dream of more rain for the Western US and hold hope for that vision. But I can feel in my bones, that is not it.
While writing this, the rain has already stopped here and there is blue peeking through the skies already. I just received a random email in my inbox with a subject line that houses dont need mud rooms anymore. And somewhere there has to be a rainbow someone will post to social media in 5 seconds.
Yet I see a mudroom.
With rainboots.
And rain.
I wonder where?
